We sat down with Rick Arlow, CEO of RegulatoryBinder.com and talked with him about his summer at our accelerator.

RegulatoryBinder.com, a product of Trailhead CFR, is a web application for managing regulatory documents of physician-sponsored clinical trials. The app is the only platform that instantly enables physicians to coordinate a clinical trial without additional procedures or risk. What attracted you to the FlashStarts accelerator?
Initially I wasn’t really looking at doing an accelerator program, I was closing clients and managing the workload myself. I was like a consulting company to start with, and then I met Charles and Jen. I realized what they were offering with the FlashStarts accelerator and wanting to do, and it clicked at the right time with me too—it made sense to go through an accelerator. I think that’s why I chose to come here—the team aspect and leadership was attractive, and that shared vision to develop an actual business is what helped me decide to apply.
What are you and your team working on right now?
It’s an enterprise document management tool for clinical trial records (for clinical trial regulatory or compliance records). That’s what we’re doing! Check out our website for more details.
What has been the biggest challenge this summer?
The biggest challenge for me was transitioning from the mindset of an individual doing this, to thinking in the mindset of a business. How to build up to all of the milestones requires me to work at this full-time, and taking that jump has also been challenging. The jump to doing this full-time—leaving a paycheck and getting private health insurance—has been a large transition. At the end of the day, you have to be the one who hits the milestones and you have to start that in advance to validate your business.
How is it working with interns?
It is good! The team of interns was one of the things that differentiated the FlashStarts accelerator from others. You have that close connection with interns, and I think that’s important early on for businesses. Getting in the mindset of managing and developing a team has been very valuable for me, since I’ve always been managing just myself. I’ve been lucky with development and marketing interns who add tons of value!
