New ‘roadshow’ to share information about blockchain possibilities

By Emily Bamforth, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Charles Stack, the founder and CEO of Flashstarts, knows it’s hard to explain blockchain. So Flashstarts, a local venture fund and business accelerator, is sponsoring a blockchain “roadshow” to travel around Northeast Ohio and expand the idea.

Blockchain is a online ledger system which can be used to record transactions securely. Advocates laud the potential of the new technology for applications in government records, banking, hospital administration and more.

If you’re interested in blockchain but don’t know how it works or how to get involved, you can attend blockchain roadshow sessions at venues like Cleveland State University, Bounce Innovation Hub and more.

Stack has explained blockchain and its potential plenty of times.

He got involved with Blockland, Cleveland’s blockchain movement, when it began last summer. Flashstarts announced during Cleveland’s first blockchain conference in December it would create $6 million pre-seed fund for blockchain startups. Stack was recently a panelist on a City Club of Cleveland panel about what’s next for the Blockland movement.

“Any new, disruptive technology is hard to understand technically unless you’re a technologist,” he said. “It’s difficult to explain in lay terms because we’re not sure how this is going to turn out, like the Internet in the 90’s.”

The Flashstarts events will explain blockchain’s basics and some of its applications, but Stack says sessions will also detail ways that people can explore blockchain.

Maybe the sessions will just get people talking about blockchain and spread the message, which is a good step, Stack said. Or maybe they’ll inspire someone to buy a small amount of Bitcoin, open a cryptocurrency wallet or try to use blockchain to solve their workplace problems.

The sessions will also share information about the Flashstarts seed fund, an upcoming accelerator program and internship program.
