Experiencing Cleveland: My Summer at Flashstarts

Experiencing Cleveland: My Summer at Flashstarts

Accelerator, Home, Interns, Our Team
In the beginning, I had no idea what working at Flashstarts and in Cleveland was going to be like. This was my first software development internship and first time coding outside of an academic environment. I wanted to explore working with startups some more after creating my own in a startup pitch competition at my school called LaunchU. I had an interesting experience with Cleveland, because I opted to live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city called Slavic Village. The streets, houses and stores are all either very rundown or abandoned. I didn’t get to know my neighbors, but my housemates were all very nice and excellent people to live with. To commute to work my roommate and fellow Flashstarts intern Marouane and I biked. It was…

“Startups, Bees and Cleveland,” by Jared Barlow

About, Accelerator, Home, Interns, Our Team
I found out about Flashstarts through the career center at my school. I applied to a variety of internships across the United States, and I chose Flashstarts for the opportunity to gain experience working with startups. I was not sure what to expect of Cleveland, but I have come to love the city after living, working, and exploring here for the past six weeks. My favorite Cleveland activities are going to the zoo and eating at the numerous fantastic restaurants. My most exciting work at Flashstarts has been my work for the GhostWave team. GhostWave is developing radio frequency noise radar to eliminate the risk of radar interference in crash avoidance systems. GhostWave is also applying this technology to beehive monitoring. I have been working on researching the potential market…

“Oh yeah, I can do that.”

“Oh yeah, I can do that.”

Accelerator, Interns, Our Team
"Oh yeah, I can do that." I said those exact words after getting my first assignment at Flashstarts. I had just been asked to create some original graphics for a commercial website, and I was so inspired by the project and the company itself that I couldn’t wait to get to work. There was only one problem: I had absolutely zero idea how to do it, and wasn’t even sure how to start.  Undeterred, I opened up a new document on my freshly installed Adobe Illustrator and got to work. The more time I spent on it, the more apparent it was how much there was to learn. Luckily, it’s now been two months since that first assignment. A lot of the basics I struggled with initially have become muscle…

Learning to work with your Clone

Learning to work with your Clone

Accelerator, Interns, Our Team
What if I told you that cloning is no longer a distant goal of the future? Gone are the days when the only things that could be cloned were plants and sheep. I came to the realization recently that this technology had advanced a long way, under the radar. What spurred this realization? The shocking finding that I, myself, had a clone. It was orientation day for the new wave of FlashStarts summer interns. Just like any other summer program, we started off the day with an icebreaker. The task was simply to introduce yourself, making sure to include your name, school, and major. As one of the first people to go, I quickly rehearsed my spiel in my head a few times before it was my turn. “Hi everyone!…

Befriending Discomfort

Befriending Discomfort

Accelerator, Interns, Our Team
One Wednesday afternoon, I sat in my Data Structures course, yearning to be anywhere except there. That’s when I noticed a message in the YSU Penguin Hackers Slack channel about an interesting internship opportunity.  On a whim, I decided to apply to dive in and try to gain some job experience. From the very beginning, challenges arose. My webcam wouldn’t function, leaving me to interview with only a microphone and an animated gif of a Dalek for Flashstarts CEO, Charles Stack, and Director of Business Development, Alayna Klco to watch.  Nevertheless, the interview went smoothly, and we decided that it’d be a great fit. This kind of learning through unexpected failure and improvisational perseverance seem to be an integral part of startup culture. I wasn’t sure what lay ahead in…

Something Cool

Something Cool

My experience at Flashstarts so far has really surpassed my expectations. What I appreciate most is the opportunity to learn. Not only have I had a chance to practice my skills in financing, I have also learned about so many different sides of a business: from marketing to outreach, to the importance of technology and how it impacts the growth of Flashstarts’ startups. There's something really cool about this kind of immersion and how much it can teach you. In this internship program, each intern is matched up with 3 different companies a week. Because of the intense pacing, the biggest challenge is learning about each of their companies’ products and structure while finishing different tasks. As a Business Management Intern, I completed competition analysis, marketing strategies, and investor engagement…

The Next Lebron James

The Next Lebron James

Accelerator, Home, Interns, Our Team
In 2002, the year before Lebron James was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the first overall pick in the NBA draft, the Cavs held a record of 17-65 with a winning percentage of just .207. This was the worst record in the Eastern Conference, making the Cavs one of the worst teams in the entire league. They were in desperate need of talented and creative players that could lift them into a new era of victory. Today, the city of Cleveland finds itself in a familiar situation - this time not in the realm of sports, but in its economic development.  The statistics are depressing: Cleveland ranks dead last -- 71st of the 71 largest metro areas -- in job creation, according to Forbes. According to the Chronicle Telegram,…

Whatever It Takes

Whatever It Takes

Accelerator, Home, Interns, Our Team
Before coming to Cleveland and beginning my internship with Flashstarts, I heard a number of jarring things about the city. Now that I'm here, I realize that they all couldn't be further from the truth. Cleveland is bursting with a determined energy, and the slogans for the beloved Cleveland Cavaliers echo this excitement. The saying “Whatever it takes” is plastered everywhere, and  “Believeland” captures the real heart of the city. Clevelanders are hard workers that move with purpose and have pride in the future of their city. There’s a new life in the city that everyone is continuing to build on. There is an air of steady optimism, and this culture seeps into the lives of Flashstarts interns. The first week really makes you question what you signed up for,…
